The Cities of Levi
Synopsis 1Chron 6:30-45 12/5/2019
The chronicler recorded the detailed genealogical record of the Levites. And he paid special attention to the priests and other Kohathites. Unsurprisingly, he carefully chronicled where each of the clans received cities in which to dwell.
The Cities of Levi
God ordained the Levites as the tribe of priests and tabernacle servants. Because of this, the Levites received income from the tithes and sacrifices of the people. Instead of land, the tithe was their assigned inheritance.
So, the Levites did not receive a territory or land like the rest of the tribes. But they still needed a physical place to live. Accordingly, the Levites were also given cities to dwell in that were scattered throughout the Promised Land. In this way, no single tribe had to bear the entire burden of the entire Levite population. But an underappreciated benefit of this arrangement was the distribution of religious expertise throughout the nation.
Because the Levites were ordained as the religious experts and mediators for the nation, having them spread throughout the nation was intended to make the nation more homogeneous in its devotion to the Lord. The Levites were the salt that seasoned the entire nation.
Salt and Light
According to demographic reports, there are approximately 2.2 billion Christians worldwide. And if you are a Christian, then you are one of these billions of people. What’s more, we are distributed throughout the world. And God has distributed us in this way so that we can be like salt – so that we can be a mediation between darkness and light.
Your purpose is to flavor the world with love.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Matt 5:13
